Focus Area 1
Secure the right to contraception, as part of a broader right to reproductive freedom
Context
Since 2022, the CECA has brought together evidence and diverse stakeholders to understand the impact of shifts in the sexual and reproductive health landscape, foster strategic collaboration, and improve contraceptive access and sexual and reproductive health equity (SRHE) more broadly.
The resulting Strategy to Preserve and Expand Contraceptive Access features five focus areas that detail what we aim to achieve and communicate where people should direct their work, recommended actions to prioritize and move forward now, and examples of work completed or underway.
Recommended Actions to Secure the Right to Contraception
Advance, pass, and implement proactive laws and policies to protect the right to contraception at all levels (federal, state, local, and institutional).
Defend existing laws and policies that secure the right to contraception through litigation, lobbying, and public information campaigns. Ensure that policymakers and regulators fully implement and enforce existing laws. In addition to public policy, this includes working at the institutional level to ensure that existing policies enabling access continue and restrictive policies (e.g., broad refusal policies) are not enacted.
Enact and implement policies to ensure that equitable contraceptive accessis fully realized and not a right in name only. Policies should fully support people accessing contraceptive information and services. Federal and state lawmakers, payers, and institutions should identify creative mechanisms to ensure robust funding for contraception and associated care.
